Random Notes and Musings

October 14th, 2005 Selling off the farm:

Our neighbour have finally retired from the daily grind of dairying.

This is the sales yard where the dairy cows are auctioned individually.

We miss seeing them going in to be milked (but our neighbour had had more than enough of it!)

Age crisis in the dairy industry looms:

The average age of dairy farmers is now well into what most would consider retirement age.

Where will our milk come from in a few years hence?

September 18th, 2005 King parrots on the bird feeder.

On the bird feeder just metres from the living room door, we had 4 species of parrots today along with 3 or more other types of birds, all on the same day.

Those are some of our steers in the background.

September 17th, 2005 Four Inches (100mm) of rain in 1 week

The outflow from our dam flows at about 1 megalitre a week under dry conditions. After heavy rain, it just gushes out the overflow.

There is also another "flood" overflow and water was going over that at the peak of the flow as well. This is well after the peak but still a lot of water. (The pipe is 18cm storm drain.)

August 10th, 2005

It's snowing today!

It has been a once in 50 year event in Victoria today with snowfall down to sea level in some places.

With the farm at 250 to 300 metres, we had some 30 minutes of real snow.
